Nonplus Records represents is an electronic music label which was founded in 2009 by Al Green (AKA Boddika) and Damon Kirkham (AKA Jon Convex), who at the time made records together under the name Instra:mental. These days Green runs the label by himself, though he's kept its original aesthetic very much intact, bringing together various kinds of club sounds under one umbrella. Think and Change sums up the Nonplus ethos, with UK acts such as Pearson Sound, SCB and Four Tet bumping elbows with the likes of Martyn and Kassem Mosse.
NonPlus has quickly established a reputation for forward-thinking bass heavy electronica across the musical spectrum. Boddika's Nonplus+ label has gone from redefining atmospheric drum & bass to becoming one of the UK's most reliable outposts for dark and moody techno. Going back to the very first release, there's a thread that ties it all together—it's hard to describe, but it's there. The music on Nonplus+ tends to sound decidedly robotic, the sum of its automated parts somehow more stirring than most. The label's first full-length compilation exhibits Boddika's keen A&Ring with a collection of club tracks as sleek and stylish as ever.
With Boddika at the helm, UK label Nonplus Records assembles a new compilation Think and Change to be released in various formats, and it proves to be an accurate representation of what we could call the "new sound" of club music, which has begun to move on from the widely appropriated sound of dubstep to foreboding, largely four on the floor techno and house music.
As Nonplus is still in its early years, there are only a few noteworthy omissions, and everything but the kitchen sink is not necessary to get the point across; however, appearances from Actress and Skream would have further rounded out this list of cutting edge producers that Nonplus has worked with, but it is likely that this label’s best years or signees are yet to come. As Patrick Masterson notes, the lineup here is homogenous to the point of near concern in terms of race and gender, but it speaks more about the relatively young label than the greater bass scene and its diverse contributors.
Even while he's helping to define the future, Boddika isn't one to forget his roots. Placed near the end is an old track from the original Autonomic triumvirate, Instra:mental & dBridge's "White Snares." Its taut drum & bass tick feels quaint in the midst of its strange bedfellows, but it also gains a certain power—a reminder of the heights the label achieved in a completely different world only a few years ago, and the vast distance it's travelled since.
Nonplus Records's artists roster includes acts such as: Instra:mental, Actress, ASC, Vaccine, Kassem Mosse, Jimmy Edgar, Lowtec, Actress, Boddika, Skream, Jon Convex, Doubleheart, Endian, Basic Soul Unit, Lol, Skudge, and many others.
