Gambrinus has been a well-kept secret on the German music scene. Core members Ulrich Joosten and Mathias G?tze-Wittschier have been playing music together for over 25 years, shaping their signature sounds with guitar, cittern, violin, melodeon, low-whistle, hurdy-gurdy, and vocals.?In August 2006, singer and instrumentalist Christine Hellweg added celtic harp, recorder, and percussion to the mix. The innovative?musical quilt?you hear from Gambrinus today was completed in April 2007 by Thomas Helmchen's colourful acoustic fabrics of soprano and alto saxophone, chromatic button accordion and bass and tenor recorders.Embracing?different styles and types of music, the quartet?s repertoire draws on mediaeval madrigals, folk songs, political chanson, critical song and singer/songwriter materials. In 2009 Gambrinus released its debut CD, Eyah! It was praised by audiences and critically acclaimed throughout the German music scene. In February 2010 the album was nominated for the ?German Record Critics' Award? (Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik).Gambrinus? version of the haunting anti-war poem Der Graben (?The Trench?), written in 1926 by German journalist and author Kurt Tucholsky and set to music by Hanns Eisler, came in as number three on Germany?s Liederbestenliste, ?The Top of the Pops? of German song in June 2009.
