Here's what we know about Luv*Jam: known to his mum as Andrew Cole, he's a house producer and DJ from Wrexham, North Wales. Enigmatic though he is, Luv*Jam has revealed more than enough personality between wax grooves. His generous string of white-hot releases on such labels as We Play House, Phonica, Skylax, Lany Recordings, and his own Crow Castle Cuts do more than enough talking. That sterling track record continues with his Throne Of Blood début.Ê Lead track "Nesta" amply demonstrates the particular skill with which Luv*Jam combines raw emotion with production savoir-faire. A lengthy intro of a pumping kick drum and dub-echoing sawtooth pads gives way to an extended groove replete with supple FM tones and subtle percussive drama.ÊUK upstarts In Fields are on remix duties for "Nesta," and their retake holds close to the spirit of the original while infusing it with a slow-burning energy. They revisit the bass line by way of fork-tongued analog resonant squelch and hone the mix to imbue the track with the gauzy luster of sonic shellac. "Ponciau" takes directions only hinted at in "Nesta" to new extremes. An eerie vox synth throbs plangently front-and-center and subdued tones and crunchy textures contribute palpable atmospherics. Though Luv*Jam inserts a number of extended beatless interludes, when the stormy kick and sweeping string pads re-enter the fray, it only confirms the track's dancefloor efficacy. "Circle" injects some straightforward booty-thumping boom-tick that counterbalances a noisy, bit-crushed ride pattern. The progression opens up to an acid-lite bass synth. The contrast between the simple-yet-careful percussion and the almost overlarge analog heft of the synth work embodies a tension that marks all of Luv*Jam's best work: always straddling wrought emotion and undeniable pump, his music hovers over the thin divide between melancholy and pure joy.
